Princess Cruise Review

My birthday seemed like the perfect excuse to make a much needed vacation getaway.  Together with my husband, ‘Mr. Wonderful’, and my incredible eighty-ish in-laws, ‘Mr. and Mrs. Spunky’, we decided on  a Princess Cruise aboard their Ship, the Crown Princess.  Read on as I share our Princess Cruise experience aboard this floating city.

We decided to fly the same day as our ship was leaving, which is not advised by the Princess because of possible flight delays, but it all worked out, even though we had very close connecting flights.  That made for a few more gray hairs.

We were fortunate to fly first class with United Airlines.  The San Diego Airport and the United staff could not have been more accommodating with the needs we had traveling with ‘Mr. and Mrs. Spunky’. In particular, Mia at the airport was a gem, she went above and beyond to help all of us.

We were then directed outside to another line to gain a color coded ticket to board one of the many touring buses which took us to our ship. It was chilly and we were all happy to find a seat in our comfortable bus with our entertaining bus driver.

As we made our way to the ship the bus driver gave us a quick city tour and shared some history. A nice bonus.

Once at the port there appeared to be many more lines of hundreds of anxious travelers.  Thank goodness for us, a very kind Princess employee quickly noticed our ‘Mr. Spunky’ might need assistance and offered a wheelchair and escorted he and ‘Mrs. Spunky’ to the front of the lines where there was disability assistance, while me and ‘Mr. Wonderful’ joined the ranks in line.  Again, Princess gains brownie points with all of us.

The lines, oh the many lines.  This continued to be an ongoing theme aboard the Crown, but to the crew members credit all of the lines throughout the week moved quickly.

Once on board we found our stateroom, dropped off our carry-on bags and found some eats.

Next post . . . read about my fist impressions of the ship, from the eye of a designer who is always looking for ways to improve any room.  Scary.

Thank you all for your patience while we’ve been away enjoying some R&R.  Its been a couple of years since we had some time to ourselves and it was greatly appreciated.

We covered a lot of ground in two weeks.  We cruised on the Crown Princess to Alaska, then spent some time in Seattle, and then took a ferry over to Victoria, Canada.  We’ve met so many kind people and were able to see stuningly beautiful places.

Before leaving I knew right away I wanted to share our adventures with all of you.  You see, when you are an Interior Designer there are very few rooms that you go into that you don’t start re-designing in your head.  I thought this could be a learning tool for all of us.  My idea was to compare notes as to what each of us would do to add some designing touches to each of our locations.  As we compare notes, you could then select a few ideas to incorporate into your own homes.

On a separate note, I also love photography and carried my camera on every step of our trip.  I can’t wait to share some of my photos.

Stay tuned . . . as I edit our photos, I’ll share each step of the trip.

Carlsbad Home Tour

We are proud to welcome you to our Carlsbad Home Tour which we completed this week.  Thanks to my “A-Team” of professionals, we completed this makeover in one day (minus the paint).  This involved myself, my two assistants, my drapery installer, furniture delivery crew of three, our handyman, and two of my receivers.  It really does take a village.

Designing this home, and becoming friends with these clients, was a true pleasure.   There two young sons, ages 2 and 5 are the cutest little guys.  It’s always bittersweet when a project comes to an end because you miss speaking with nice home owners like this family.

Before - The Master Bedroom This couple had moved into this home just a couple of months before this picture was taken.  They knew when they moved here from Northern California that they were going to be doing a lot redecorating, and were living with minimal furnishings.

Master Bedroom Makeover

Ta-Da!  When working with this wife, she had several requests, but the biggest one of all was please use the colors gray and yellow, her favorite for home interiors.  Mission accomplished!

Bright Master BedroomEverything is new in this bright master bedroom, and with the request of the couple we kept all of the furnishings easy to clean because of their two lil’ people.  All of the bedding is washable, the two nightstands have stone tops that can be wiped off, and the drapery (not shown) is ready made and can be thrown in the wash.

The furniture pieces were investment pieces which this family will enjoy for years to come.  I regret that I didn’t capture a picture of the beautiful Armoire that we installed.  It has an antique glass front and will not only accommodate their TV but also a coffee maker and small fridge.  These items will allow these young parents to grab a bottle for the baby or make a cup of coffee, without having to go downstairs.  Brilliant!

I’m loving the table lamps in this bedroom.  I think we’ll be seeing a set in my own personal bedroom soon.  Their neither too fancy or too boring, they satisfy my ever changing designs needs.

Yellow and Gray Bedroom

Now lets move onto the dining room and living room combo.  These areas used to be dedicated to the kids play area, but has now become the adult “chilling” rooms where guests, family and frequent overnight guests can be entertained.

Living Room Makeover That little dining room table in this “before” shot looks so lonely.  Again, we changed everything in this room(s), and divided the room into two different areas with simply using two area rugs and floating (furniture not against the walls) some of the furniture in the middle of the room.

Yellow and Gray Dining Room

There will be a lot of entertaining at the new dining room table.  For every day we left it set up for six people but it extends to accommodate 12, yep it’s a big boy!  We also used completely different chairs for the host chairs (at the heads of the table), they even came from a different manufacturer which helps to make everything not to look to matchy-matchy.  We had custom plush lumbar yellow pillows made for the host chairs, which adds that pop of yellow the homeowner was craving.

Gray and Yellow Living Room We still have several additions to make to this living room which will include a table lamp, art and accessories.  We installed the major pieces in the room and their ready for guests, or simply a place to hide away with a glass of wine and a good book.

Kitchen Pendant Lighting We made one small change to the kitchen by changing out the pendant lighting.  This simple change modernized this traditional area.  Amazing what an impact a light fixture can make.

Family Room Makeover

Then we have the family room, the heartbeat of the house for this family of four.  Most of this “before” furniture was from the homeowners younger years when functionality wasn’t as important as it is today with demanding careers and two little people. We decided to make orange the impact color in this room so that it blended with the adjoining cherry cabinets in the kitchen.

Orange Family Room See the legs on that beautiful swivel chair, they are a nod to the mid-century furnishings that these homeowners admire.

That small table to the right of the chair can be used for a drink, book or as an ottoman as it’s light weight and easily moved.

That area rug makes this room, the client was concerned when I first suggested using it and during our reveal this week it quickly became one of her favorite items.

The leather ottoman is going to be perfect for this family because it opens up to a LOT of hidden storage (for toys).  Their sons will have fun finding their new hiding place.

Do you see that sweet little kitty on the couch?  Wasn’t it nice of him to have fur the color of the room?

Canvas Wall Art We found the perfect wall wood art, see it there in the hallway?  Both of these clients are in the tech world so it seemed only appropriate when we noticed it on a recent shopping trip.

Every good home reveal should end with a glass of wine, lots of smiles, and just a few tears because it’s time to say goodbye . . . at least until the next project.

Thanks for joining me on this Carlsbad Home Tour, it’s been a lot of fun working on this project.  Now onto our next fun project.
