PUB QUIZ

Let’s face it no one wants to feel like they don’t belong in their own home.  If you don’t allow enough space around your furniture your’re going to end up with grumpy people, banged up knees, and your house is going to look a lot smaller and cluttered.   Let’s see if we can make everyone more comfortable.  No more feeling like this . . .

Successful furniture arrangement is not a lucky accident.  There are several factors involved in determining the right place for each item.  As designers we are taught “rules”, but as we all know sometimes rules are made to be broken.  I’m going to provide you with some simple guidelines when moving your furniture around to make your room(s) comfortable for living.

1.  Consider natural traffic paths BEFORE arranging furniture.   Major traffic areas you should allow a width of 30-36 inches., and for minor traffic patterns 18-30 inches.   To save on those colorful black and blue knees, please allow 12-18 inches between you and that needed cocktail table.

2.  If you are trying to pre-plan for furniture pieces here are a couple of standard sizes that should help you guestimate.

A.  Sofa 7 Feet Wide – 3 Feet Deep

B.  Arm Chair – 3 Feet Wide – 3 Feet

C.  Chaise 3 Feet Wide – 5 Feet Deep

D.  Curve On A Sectional – 4 to 6 Feet On Each Side

Is there enough room around your cocktail table?

Always consider both USE and APPEARANCE when placing furniture.  When use and appearance are in conflict, use should be given priority.
