2015 Top 10 Decor Trends

All of us designers usually attend at least one to two design shows per year.  I am fortunate to attend the Las Vegas show normally twice a year, and then the BIG BOY of shows in High Point, North Carolina every other year.

The Las Vegas show takes a minimum of three days to go through and the High Point show takes at least four, and that’s with being very selective with what showrooms we visit.  As you walk these show rooms it becomes very evident of the trends of the coming year.  You begin to see the same things repeated in every show room, but translated in different formats.

Here are the top ten trends of 2015:

1.  MIXED METALS – Just when you think you’ve gotten rid of all of the brass fixtures in your homes, it’s comes back BIG.  It’s everywhere, in all of the design show rooms!  Although it’s back it’s in a much more subtle format, generally a matte finish as shown in the picture below.

2.  MOODY BLUE – This one makes me smile as two of my studio walls are painted a very deep, and rich, navy blue.  You will see everything from deep moody blues in paint, to textiles, to tile.

3.  NATURE INSPIRED DESIGNS – This has always been a favorite in our home as we enjoy spending a lot of time outdoors, then again that’s easy to do in San Diego.  Think about bringing some branches indoors, framing some leaves, taking pictures outdoors and framing them for indoors.

4.  CASUAL CHIC – You want some sparkly things in your home but you also want to feel like you can put your feet up on the sofa.  Here is a good example in this photo (below).

5.  WALLPAPER THAT WOWS – Yep, wallpaper is making a huge return, but it’s not your Grandma’s wallpaper.  We are seeing it used on many accent walls and one of my favorite ways is to go BOLD in a powder room.

6.  COUNTER TOPS – LESS IS MORE -I’ve seen this one coming for awhile.  The granite with the small dotty patterns are really over.  If using granite you want to go with a subtle pattern, or no pattern at all.  Quartz is the new go to for counter tops and once again used in a subtle or no pattern at all.

7.  TOUCH ME TEXTURES – We’re seeing this mainly in wall coverings, cabinetry and tile.  When you think about grass cloth wallpaper, it screams “touch me”.

8.  THREE DIMENSIONAL TILE – This one makes me happy too because we included it in our remodel this past year.  The back of our guest bathroom shower has large scale tiles that make the wall look like a wave is coming through.  I’m hoping to have some professional shots of our home taken this year to share with all of you, but until here is a photo to enjoy (below).

9.  WINDOW SHEERS – I think we’ve seen this in Southern California for some time.  Here in San Diego, most of us want to have nothing heavy on the windows.  When we want to frame a window with fabric, our go to selection is a sheer fabric.

10. FABRIC LARGE PRINTS – MAINLY FLORAL –  Not real sure how I’m feeling about this, I think you have to be very selective with what you select so you don’t over power a room.  On the other hand, it’s a great way to get a big bang for little cost.  In this picture you will see a bold print used on the pillows (below).
