Princess Cruise Excursion – Can you say BEAR! This was my favorite part of our entire vacation.  It’s an adventure that will never be forgotten and worth every penny spent.

Taku Lodge - Princess cruise

We knew when we booked our cruise that we wanted one fly over experience to see the detail of the glaciers and this ended up to be a great selection.  The Taku Lodge Flight and Feast was an excursion in Juneau and was booked directly through Princess Cruises.

Princess Cruise - Sea Plane

There it is!  Our Sea Plane.  How often does one get to have such an adventure.  It was a cloudy day filled with light sprinkles but it didn’t in any way hinder our views or experience.

These planes were very comfortable, our pilot was very knowledgeable and made us all feel very comfortable during the flight and getting off and on the plane.  During our flight the pilot told us of points of interest and when he wasn’t speaking there was very beautiful music on our headphones.

Princess Cruise

Guess who?  Okay, so mint green isn’t my color.  🙂

Pricess Cruise - Sea Plane

The view of one of the glaciers as we flew over.  See that beautiful blue color, it was unbelievable in person (from up high that is).

Princess Cruise - Sea Plane

A few more shots of that beautiful blue color within the cracks of the glacier.  It really is very sad that these incredible glaciers are receding at a much higher speed than ever recorded.

Taku Lodge BBQ

When we arrived at the lodge, this is what greeted us.  A smoking BBQ with incredibly fresh salmon. The Taku Lodge has perfected a marinade that they continually brush on the salmon which caramelizes to a total perfection.  Yum Yum

Taku Lodge Bears

We weren’t there more than a few minutes when we hear someone scream “Bear”!  That got our attention fast!!! (See Above Photo)  Apparently these ‘little’ black bears come out of the bush when they smell the salmon on the barbecue.

See the gentleman in the foreground of the picture?  He and several other Taku Lodge staff members were holding large thick poles.  They pounded these poles on the ground as the bears (yes, there ended up being three) came to close.   A little nervy, but something I will never forget.

Princess Cruise Excursion

Here our furry friend is sitting under a tree just waiting to charge the BBQ for the fresh salmon.

On a side note, see all those little white spots on Mr. Bear?  Those are mosquitoes. That state bird was abundant, and you see it on Mr. Bear, they were also all over us in the same amount.  The Taku staff had a tray of mosquito repellent they offered, but I passed because I had long sleeves and pants.  BIG MISTAKE!  I was covered with bites the next day, with over twenty on just my wrists.  Wear that darn spray and pack Benedryl in your bag for the possible itching.

Princess Cruise Excursion - Can you say BEAR!

Once we went into the lodge for our delish salmon, the bears quickly jumped up on the BBQ for the leftovers. We were about twenty feet away inside of the lodge catching pictures as these furry friends walked and sat right on the hot coals.  Amazing it didn’t hurt them.

Taku Lodge

The inside of the lodge was so cozy and intimate.  Here is a link to the history of the lodge which is on the Lodges web site, and was also shared with us prior to our meal.  View full post »

Our Crown Princess Mini-Suite Stateroom stateroom was on the eighth floor/deck which is know as the Emerald Deck.  Our room was next door to Mr. and Mrs. Spunky which worked out great!

We were towards the back of the ship which was right under one of the dance areas.  At first I feared we would hear people doing the Cha-Cha or Twerking all night, but that fear was un-needed as we heard nothing at all.

Crown Princess Stateroom

Above – This is your door marker and any communication from the ship staff is left here daily.  Wondering when all of this information might go digital and be shown on the stateroom TV’s.  You know, save paper and save some trees.

Crown Princess Mini-Suite Stateroom

Above – This is our stateroom and it was very comfortable and had a great deal of storage and in my opinion had plenty of electrical outlets which seems to be a concern of many cruisers.

This is a really out there comment but if your looking for the hair dryer when you arrive, and you look high and low in the bathroom swearing that it was listed on all of your cruise literature, SURPRISE it’s at the desk next to the bed.  Took us awhile to find this most important prepping tool.  The bad news this blow dryer is the worst, do yourself a favor and bring one from home.

Decorating Notes –  Well where do I start? I think we can make a blanket statement and say it’s dated . . . big time.  If this were one of my clients homes I would suggest the following; all lighting should be changed, all art needs updating, the wood trim on cabinetry needs to be re-stained or removed, that poor sofa is awful and at minimum needs to be re-upholstered or better yet replaced, all cabinetry needs doors to hide clutter (needed in all small places).  There you go, my major hit list of updates.

Crown Princess Mini-Suite Stateroom

A quick peek at the sitting room in our stateroom.  That poor sofa looks so sad, it’s just screaming for some help.  Also, this sofa was only comfortable for sitting on to put on your shoes, etc.  I don’t think anyone would be able to sit there for any length of time, very uncomfortable. Just head over to the comfy bed to read a book.

Crown Princess Stateroom

Above – The other side of the sitting area. Did you notice all of that storage!?  There were also two flat screen TV’s which I’m sure would be great for some guests but both myself and Mr. Wonderful thought there should be a screen of some part that could be pulled across these two areas so that if someone wanted to watch TV while someone napped, there would be little concern of bothering your stateroom roommate.

As a designer I laid in this stateroom and continually was thinking, “what can we do about the drapery”?  The poor drapery in these guestrooms gets a workout when the sliding doors are opened.  Our drapery was very wrinkled, one of the pull bars once missing, and several of the drapery hooks were MIA.  I’m sure with all of the humidity, rain and wind these poor drapery get a work out.  Maybe next time can give some thought to a hard treatment like shutters, etc.

The closet worked out perfect for us.  We had called and arranged for an outside service for a wheelchair for our Mr. Spunky and the closet, without doors, was perfect.  Also, what is not pictured, and to the right of the closet, is a floor to ceiling storage cabinet with many shelves.

Our bathroom, which was very functional and had lots of storage. I was continually amazed that we had great water pressure and the hot water was quick and abundant.

Crown Princess Stateroom

Our Crown Princess Mini-Suite Stateroom had a tub, and a BIG tub, insert happy dance here.  This scored big points with me because in our last couple of cruises we’ve had tiny showers and no tub.

Crown Princess Stateroom

My only concern about the bathroom, other than it needing a face lift, was the mold that I found around the tub faucets.  Remember I tend to lean towards being a Germophobe.

This was our Mini- Suite stateroom patio which we didn’t get use a lot simply because of the weather, but we thoroughly enjoyed having this area and would highly recommend this option.  We would go out there for fresh air, look over the side as the ship was docking, go out with our binoculars to look at wild life and to chat with Mr. and Mrs. Spunky next door.

Again, there were some simple housekeeping and repair options that needed attention.

Wondering what would happen if the cruise lines would build in a day every month for the ships to be docked for minor repairs, or reserve 25% of the trip during each trip for repairs.  Just a thought.

Catch our post tomorrow when I will cover our first excursion which was our favorite and will be remembered forever.  It truly was priceless and I would suggest it to everyone.

Claudia Goertz - Oh dear! While more spacious than most, the condition of that stateroom is appalling! Eww! I am really surprised.ReplyCancel

Princess Cruise - Crown Ship

The Crown Princess – Our first impressions are always so important, whether it be a new house, a business meeting attire or a cruise ship.  That first impression is formed within minutes . . . what did the Crown Princess have to say to me, the ever critical Interior Designer.

Princess Cruise Staterooms

In all fairness I have to mention this ship was first released in 2006, it was dry docked in 2011 for some freshening up, and holds 3,080 guests. Each week there are only several hours from the time the guests leave the boat and the new guests enter.  That in itself is a – m – a – z – i – n – g.

Since it’s been ten years since this ships original sailing, it’s time for a Crown Princess face lift!   The good news, the ship was exceedingly clean.  That makes this germaphobe girl happy.

Crown Princess Ship Cruise

(Above and Below) – This area is the central hub of the ship and is known as “The Piazza” and normally has some type of entertainment while at sea. We met so many new friends here while enjoying the festivities.

Isn’t that ceiling pretty!

The 24 Hour Coffee Shop

(Above) – Need your Starbucks fix?  This 24 Hour coffee shop is located on the bottom floor of the Piazza.   This was also a great area to wait for your table in the “Any Time” dining room, which is to the left in this photo.  Only a few times did we have to wait for a table, and it was never more than 10 or 15 minutes.  Just enough time to get a nice drink to take to our dinner table.

Crown Princess Cruise Ship

(Above) – To the far right of the coffee bar (AKA – Caffeine Fix) you can also pick-up some pastries, a deli sandwich or a refreshing salad to make up for all of the scrumptious pastries.

“Movies Under the Stars” are set-up every night, although I believe it was to cold for most to enjoy on this Alaskan cruise.  The Princess crew goes all out to make this a special experience.  During the early evening hours the beach chairs are draped in warm comfortable fuzzy blankets and a crew member comes around with a cart serving milk and cookies throughout the movie.  Great idea Princess!

Pool Level - Movies Under the Stars

There were lots of pools on this ship, I think five.  There was always staff pool side making sure things were clean, that there were plenty of pool towels, and that dishes and glasses were quickly cleared.  Go Princess team!

Crown Princess Cruise Ship

Here is a shot of the buffet dining room, although not a great shot, sorry.  This always seemed to be a very busy area and you normally had to keep an eye out for an empty table.  On several occasions we had to ask if we could share a table with other families because of no table availability.

IMG_3019 This was the wine bar located on the bottom floor of the Piazza.  I never noticed much of a crowd in this little gem of a hideaway.  In the cold weather this would be a great getaway for a quiet conversation, or some time with a good book.

Decorating Notes – This dark wood, faux stone walls and moody lighting would make for a fantastic wine cellar.

Crown Princess Cruise

(Above) – We celebrated my birthday by making a reservation at this on board steakhouse which required a premium up charge.

Decorating Notes

Faux stained glass lighting fixture . . . just say NO!  Enjoyed the dark wood that will never go out of style, and perfectly appropriate for a steakhouse.

Crown Princess Cruise Above – Crooners is a piano bar which is located on the third floor of the Piazza.  We found ourselves slipping off to this musical oasis when we needed a nice cold drink (okay alcoholic drink).   We found that many cruisers made a pit stop here after their time ashore.  Because my Mr. Wonderful and Mr. Spunky purchased the Princess Drink Card, they experimented with drinks they’ve always wanted to try.   I think we came out on the “win” side of this purchase.

I’ve decided to cover the ship Spa in another post because it deserves some space of it’s own. The running joke among the four of us became . . . what day did I NOT have an appointment at the spa.  So continue to read as I make additional posts over the next week.

When I was researching cruise ships and everything they each offered, I had lots of questions. If you are like me and want some honest answers, please don’t hesitate to drop me a “comment” below and I can answer you publicly or privately . . . just let me know your choice.

My next post will cover our Stateroom . . .
