As I prepare to deliver some wood furniture to a client the question has come up about the proper care and maintenance of these investment pieces.  Below is a some information I provide to each of my clients when a wood piece is delivered to their home.

Caring for Wood Furniture

Caring for furniture is easy. Follow a few simple guidelines will help extend the life of your furniture.

– Always dust with a polish moistened cloth. Polish cushions the cloth, eliminating the scratching that occurs with dry dusting. Dust will scratch the furniture surface if not removed properly.

– Use a soft, clean cloth that won’t scratch the surface. Avoid coarse or scratchy materials or fabrics.

– Never use soap and water on furniture. Water can penetrate the finish and raise the grain on wood, causing damage.

The Enemies of Furniture

Many common problems in furniture care are caused by the elements. If you are aware of these troublemakers, the resulting damage can easily be avoided.

– Sunlight’s ultraviolet rays can damage wood finishes. Arrange furniture out of direct sunlight; use sun screening drapes during intense sunlight hours; rotate furniture in place and in room arrangements.

– Liquid spills will damage furniture if not removed promptly. Use coasters under beverage glasses and saucers under cups and flower pots. If a spill occurs, immediately blot it gently without rubbing the surface.

– Heat creates a chemical change in the furniture finish which can result in a white spot. Use protective pads under hot dishes, utensils or cooking appliances.

– High humidity causes wood to swell. Low humidity causes wood to lose moisture and shrink. Extreme changes cause warping, splitting and cracking.

– Try to keep humidity as constant as possible.

Choosing the Right Products

A quality polish enhances the natural beauty of wood by complementing the luster and enriching the grain. It protects the finish because it serves as a temporary barrier to spilled liquids. The cleaning ingredients in polish effectively remove smudges, dust and soil when properly applied. Tips for Better Dusting:

– Be sure to use the same type of polish consistently. Your furniture will appear cloudy or streaky if oil-based and wax-based polishes are interchanged.

– Always use a fine furniture polish when dusting. Never dry dust, as it could case microscopic scratches on your furniture surface. Remember to change dusting cloths frequently since a dirty cloth may scratch your furniture’s surface.

– Spray your furniture surface evenly, but not too generously. Wipe in a circular motion with a soft, clean cloth to clean and loosen the old polish.

– Then, buff until completely dry for a beautiful shine and a smudge-resistant finish. For wood trim, spray polish on the cloth first, then dust.

Hope this information is helpful as you care for the wood pieces in your home.

Before & After

Here is a quick continuation of the post from yesterday.  This is a small adjoining sitting room and office  to Maryann and Craig’s master bedroom.

When I first met with Maryann she wanted this room to feel a little cozier and more like a retreat where she could have some quiet time.

I immediately suggested we add drapery panels to the windows, add some patterned pillows to the sofa, change out the dated recliner, shop for some new art, bring in some chair side lighting, and last but not least add a small table next to the new recliner.

The drapery panels we added are perfect!  They are silk and in the same tones of the adjoining Master Bedroom.  You will notice that the wood rod we added is mounted higher than than window to make the window and ceiling look taller, a “trick” nearly everyone could use.  Also, the drapery panels are non-functional, meaning they are there just for aesthetics.  The panels are hung just at the side edges of the window, this allows for all of the benefit of the window light and gives the appearance of the window being wider.

We added a simple pillow to the existing sofa to coordinate with the window treatments.  It also has some fun multi-colored brushed fringe.

Check out the shape of the small chair side table, it’s perfect with the lamp that sits directly behind the table.

Had to share with you a close up of the new chair side floor lamp.  It’s so unique, it has a metal outer shade with an interior shade made of textured velum.  It’s really the icing on the cake in this new hideaway.

Just a few short months ago, as many of you know, I was in a wheel chair after a “graceful” fall while in the Colorado snow.  The three months of healing left me bored silly so my husband would humor me with frequent trips to craft and DIY locations.  During one of those outings Maryann, my soon to be new client, overheard my husband and I having a good laugh while trying to get into my company vehicle.   Maryann got a kick out of us, jotted down the phone number on my vehicle and called us a couple months later.  You just never know where you’ll meet your next client.

After our initial consultation, Maryann, and her husband Craig, brought me on board to do an update on their master bedroom, sitting room and family room.  I’ve truly been blessed by getting to know this family and look forward to having them in our lives for years to come.

Let me share with you a few of the BEFORE photos:

Now onto the fun stuff.

The dressers, headboard and foot board were items that this couple purchased when they were first married so they were staying for sentimental reasons.  Nearly everything else changed.

It’s hard not to have a “favorite” every time I’m asked to re-design a room.  In this room it’s most definitely the lighting fixtures.  The chandelier and sconces are just stunning and give this special couple that feeling of a spa.

We changed the entire color scheme of this getaway and removed anything that was blue and went with a tone-on-tone look.

The wall behind the king sized bed became a feature wall and we hung a beautiful glittery wallpaper.   It’s truly hard to appreciate how beautiful this paper is in this photo.

The bedside lamps were also changed and brought in more in scale with the bed.  It’s important to remember that you bedside lighting should be above your shoulder when sitting in bed.  This will help when reading in bed and not make the light look like it belongs in a child’s room.

Maryann decided to change out all of the bedding and I just love having the many layers when designing a bed, this one was no exception and felt appropriate in this design.

A closer look at the new bedding, it’s truly stunning.  That detail on the duvet cover has a metallic silver and gold thread running through the design.  All of the bedding had a silky feel and looks and feels like high hotel luxury.

AFTER – New Sconces and Mirror

Not a great photo but it gives you a side glance at the sconces that were installed above the dresser along with a new round mirror.  All of the lighting fixtures that were installed by an electrician were put on dimmers and separate lines, in my opinion a must.

We have one more task for this bedroom and it’s to install antiqued mirror on top of the low dresser and nightstands.  This is going to update that furniture and reflect the light and blinge of the new fixtures.  I can’t wait!

Tomorrow I’ll do a feature on the sitting room that adjoins this bedroom.

Thank you again to Maryann and Craig who invited me into their beautiful home.
