Sur La Table Cooking School La JollaToday my husband and I had the absolute pleasure of having a “Date Day” and attended a cooking class at Sur la Table, in La Jolla (California).

NOTE:  If you’ve never been to La Jolla, California you must make a point to visit this beach town.  Today was one of those beautiful California beach days.

My plan for this BLOG has always been share things that I believe are beautiful in life, which doesn’t always mean just interiors.  Today that ‘beautiful’ blanket included our two hour cooking class.

Fall Decorating Ideas

We arrived early for our class and I was pleased to see the store decked out for the Fall season.  There were all types of decorating ideas which I’m looking forward to incorporating into my own decor.

Fall-Decorating-Ideas

These are actually serving spoons, aren’t they great!  I would love to have at least a half dozen of them for my Thanksgiving table.

Fall-Entertaining-Ideas

Then there was this great Fall pitcher.  I can imagine it with a great floral arrangements that also contained some seasonal vegetables and fruit.  It would be stunning, and unexpected, in the middle of our Thanksgiving buffet.

Fall Entertaining Ideas Napkin Place Setting

I’ll take a couple dozen of these . . . pretty please.

Now onto our incredible cooking class lead by our outstanding Chef Gabrielle.  This guy knew his stuff!  We received so many handy hints that we’ll be using in our kitchen forever.  Not only cooking hints, but things that will also keep our family safe.

Fall Entertaining La Jolla Ideas

When we arrived for class we were greeted and offered something to drink and a fresh new apron. I must also mention that this kitchen was spotless!  This is kind of one of my pet peeves about any where were I dine, shop, entertain, etc. It only comes before the decor and comfort of my surroundings.

Our class was limited to eight people, who were broken down into partners.   As you can see in the picture above, some of the prep work had been done for us and broken down into several trays for us to use throughout class.  Aren’t those trays displayed beautifully.

We made a total of three soups in our two hour class; Corn and Shrimp Chowder, Lentil, Garbanzo and Chicken Steve with a Middle Eastern Flair and a Tomato Bisque.

Fall Entertaining San Diego  Here is our fantastic Chef, Gabrielle.  This star professional was so knowledgeable and demonstrated so much patience with all of us novice cooks.  In this picture he is finishing off our cheese crackers that were placed on our Tomato Bisque Soup.

Fall Entertaining San Diego A little closer view, don’t they look yummy.

Fall Entertaining San Diego DecoratingA few more of our ingredients.  We used half whole milk and half creme for our chowder.

Fall Entertaining Decorating

Listening closely to what our Chef was telling us, heck I didn’t want to burn down the building.

Fall Decorating Entertaining San Diego Two hours went by so quick, but no worries we’ll be back.  I would never hesitate to recommend this location for cooking classes, well done Sur la Table and Chef Gabrielle.

Condo Sofa Navy Blue PIllows

There always seems to be just the right amount of options when designing a room.  Just take a look at this beautiful condo sized sofa for clients to do the “sit” test, and all those racks of fabric choices in the background.  This makes a designer, and her clients, happy campers.

Did you know that there is hardly a day that goes by in the studio when we don’t receive a new sample of something to use in a design.  An industry that is always changing makes me happy.

Wallpaper Designs

Then there are just a “few” wallpaper books.  Have you noticed how hard those are to find out in the store fronts these days, but yet they are so back in style.

Designer Fabrics Fabricut RMCOCO

There is never a shortage of fabric choices, we have something for every budget.  This picture doesn’t even cover the hundreds of fabric books we have to select from.  It’s easy to get distracted in this area, I think I need a 12-Step program for fabric addiction.

Designer Fabric Orange

So fun to see the new color trends every year.  This year the colors orange and navy are going strong!

We’ve had an incredible business week and will be heading out for some R&R this weekend.  My husband and I have actually booked a cooking class, something we’ve wanted to do for a long time.  My husband is a soup lover so we’re heading over to the La Jolla, Sur La Table store for a class in fall soups.  It’s going to be a fun San Diego weekend.  I’m hoping I will be able to catch some photos.

Have a great weekend everyone.

If you’re a regular reader of our BLOG you’ll remember that yesterday I posted about a meeting I attended of successful female San Diego business owners.  After attending that meeting, I felt needed a post of its own was worthy of this location (a.k.a. treasure).

I had expected a simple coffee shop but was thrilled to arrive and see so much more.  The general feel of this cafe is something that I would expect when traveling in Napa.  An industrial look with a warm feel.  As a San Diego Interior Designer, I’m always on the search for something that offers up a new and inspiring interior, this did let me down.

Imagine not only a place to enjoy your favorite beverage, but also a place where you can sample a gourmet dessert (baked on the premises daily), or order a decadent sandwich or salad for lunch but, they also have out of this world cooking classes!  I’ve personally been looking for this last option for months as my husband and I both enjoy cooking together and what better date than a cooking class.

Curious Fork Solana Beach
When I’m sampling a new place to dine I’m just as picky about my surroundings as I am about the food.  Comes hand-in-hand with being an Interior Designer.  I’m even pickier when it comes to staying at a hotel, so for me to find a new gem like The Curious Fork is a big ‘score’ .
Inside this cafe you’ll find a long bar height table that looks out of the front of the cafe and is completed with bar stool.  Then there are two large tables that consist of two tables bunched together to make one.  These are the areas used for their hands on cooking classes.  If you look at the far left at the picture above, you will see a large chalk board, that is the kitchen demonstration area for their cooking classes.
San Diego Cooking Classes
Speaking of cooking classes, take a look at the sampling of the upcoming events.  If you jump over to their web site  you will see a complete list of their classes for the next two months.  You can even sign-up on line.  While their take a look at the class chefs and their bios, I M P R E S S I V E.
San Diego Cooking Tools Interior Design
Beautifully displayed on a full wall of this new found treasure, you’ll find some very creative cook books, cooking tools and just simply put, some fantastic staging.
San Diego Desserts Interior Design
Blueberry Lemon Almond Cake, all I can say is . . . YES PLEASE!  I actually was going to purchase a slice before I left and I forgot.  I need to find a reason to go back this week.
Curious Fork Solana Beach
Snapped this shot when I was leaving, you’ll have to stop by and spend some time soon.  They are right off the 5 Freeway right near the Del Mar Race Track.  Here is the address if you would like to GPS your trip:
512 Via de la Valle, Suite 102
Solana Beach, CA 92075
(858) 876-6386
Enjoy!  Let me know your thoughts when you get a chance to stop by . . . hey grab a
piece of that cake for me while you’re there.
