Coastal Living Magazine – Coronado Design House Tour

Yesterday was a fun day touring the Coastal Living Magazine’s Design Home on Coronado Island (San Diego).  I met up with several of my Southern California designer friends and we made our way through this beautifully updated ocean front home.

First, I must compliment Coastal Living on a job well done.  Over the years I’ve toured many of these types of homes and this was beautifully organized and designed.  When purchasing tickets, you had to select a period of time so as not to overwhelm the neighborhood, or the amount of visitors inside the house.  Bravo!

Now for the house review.  We were able to actually shoot pictures on the interior . . . I loved that!  Over the next week or so I’m going to do a break down on the various areas so I don’t overwhelm one post.  Today it will be the exterior.

The picture above is the entrance to the house and a beautiful wrap around porch.  The house had a old school, casual, beach vibe.  All of the wicker furniture, on the various patios (I lost count after four) were of the old school design.  What I was loving were the monogrammed pillows in nearly every chair and chaise.

Another shot of the front porch (above), but what I thought was worth mentioning here is the artificial grass.  We are seeing more and more of this in sunny California where we are experiencing a severe drought.  What do you think of artificial turf?  Does anyone out there have it, and if so do you think it was worth the investment?

Now this is the view (above) that hits you right when you walk through the front door.  You actually see directly through the house to this back door porch overlooking the ocean and public park.  If you were to walk out to the sand and look to your left,  you would see the historical  Hotel Del Coronado.

One of the many places to sit outside (above).  This comfortable chair was on the back patio where you could come in from the beach, knock off the sand, and head back into the house through the back porch.

There were three levels to this home, one being a basement.   This is rather unheard of in California but it seems I’m seeing more and more of it when I visit my clients who live on or near the beach.   This picture (above) is one of the outside patios that actually faces the non-ocean side of the house.

I’m someone who LOVES a lot of light in the house, and this house did not disappoint.  In the picture above, I’m standing in the main living area, looking over the open staircase which is surrounded by windows on three sides.  It made me happy 🙂

This area (above) was interesting.  The entire depth of the back yard, once you step off of the deck, I would guess to be about 20 feet deep.  Within this area was a spa which bubbled over  into a very small pool.  The sound of the water falling was such a relaxing sound when you came out into the yard.  I was wondering if the pool might be one of those exercise pools where you swim against a current because it was the tiniest pool I’ve ever seen.

This sitting area (above) was facing the stunning Pacific Ocean.  This sofa would be a great place for an afternoon nap, a good book and a tall glass of iced tea.

There were four of these out door swivel chairs (above) directly outside of the kitchen and family room and positioned in a nice conversation circle.  With them being swivel you could comfortably carry on a conversation with someone in the house, or turn around and watch a California sunset.

The outdoor table settings were perfect.

Several shades of blue and kelly green were used throughout the house.  What was a surprise were the use of animal prints and fur textures, definitely the unexpected in a casual beach house.  I’ll share those in my upcoming posts.
