2015 Home Goals – List of 10

PIC_Goals

Happy New Year friends!  Are you ready to start fresh and make goals for 2015 . . . yikes 2015!

As we begin the New Year it’s a great time to sit down and give serious thought as to what you want to accomplish.  I’m actually making a list this year for our home, my business and my relationships (husband, kids, grandchildren, friends, etc.)  For those of you who know my personally know that I’m a big time list maker, and now the secret is out to my blogging family.  My husband just came by the computer and said, “are you making a goal list for 2015”?  Boy, does that guy know me well.

When thinking about the goals for your home, think about think about the time involved and the budget you are able to designate.  Remember, many of these goals do not need to involve money.  What results do we want to see next year when we look over the past year?

We can’t do it all, but we can focus on a few things that matter to you this year.  I would suggest keeping your goal to the ten most important.   Keep the list attainable, sure we would all love the multi-million dollar home, but then there is reality.

Here are few goals I’ve set for my clients.  Let’s see how they work for you.

  1. Drapery Panels – Pretty please, don’t let them be half way up the wall.  If they are full panels, they should at least be “kissing” the ground.  We can actually help you alter any ready-made options you have in your home.
  2. Drapery Rods – Please keep them high above the windows.  This makes your entire room look much grander.
  3. Area Rugs – A general rule, bigger IS better.  It’s so hard to walk into a room and see an area rug that is too small.  As a general room you want the legs of the furniture to a least have the front legs of the furniture sitting on the rug.
  4. Completely finish a room this year!  This is actually on my goal list too.  This should mean everything from the flooring, to the paint, to the window treatments, to the accessories.
  5. Remember that your front door is your chance to make your first impression.  If you still have a wreath hanging on the front door from Easter, or the cob webs are still out there from Halloween, it may need some attention.
  6. Family Pictures – As a general rule, the pictures that I have sitting out on tables, or on my entertainment unit, etc.  I try to keep them to no larger than 5 X 7 size.  When I do use family photos on the wall, I group them together to make them “speak” to one another.  An example of what I mean is that in my hallway I have a picture of each of our six children (yep . . . six).  Each of the pictures is in black and white, with a white matte and the same frame.  They are hung with three on the top and three on the bottom, which I’ve done according to each of their ages because I didn’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings.
  7. De-clutter – There are so many that are in need, this is a win-win for everyone.  I try to take a bag a month to my local charity.
  8. Keep It Green – When making changes to your home this year always ask about the “green” aspects of what you are buying.  Let’s all make the earth a better place for generations to come.
  9. If painting is on your list this year.  Please try VERY hard to not use anything glossy on the walls.  Many of the flat paints are now washable.  Even if you have to pay a few dollars more for an upgraded paint, it’s worth it!  Keep the glossy paints to your trims, doors, etc.  This past year when we remodeled our home, I even kept flat in my bathrooms and kitchens just to see how I would like it, so far GREAT!
  10. Make your house a home.  Sounds so easy, but if you are in the middle of craziness in your life, you need somewhere to escape. Put something in the oven, light a candle, pick-up the toys, etc.  Maybe a glass of wine J

Once your write down your home goals, you can experience a sense of peace and clarity about what your next steps are. And knowing what you are going to focus your attention on brings a sense of relief that those troubling areas, bad habits you have that impact your home negatively, or things that bother us about our homes can actually improve.

Wishing you all the best; peace, health and happiness in 2015.
